BANGALORE, JAN. 5. To enhance the city's greenery, the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) will plant over 50,000 saplings this year.

The Mayor, R. Narayanaswamy, said this after planting saplings of two special varieties of Champaka trees presented by the Udayabhanu Kalasangha on the BMP premises on Wednesday.

He said the city's greenery could be enhanced only with participation from citizens.

The Mayor, who had announced that he would receive saplings from organisations instead of garlands and bouquets, said the BMP would distribute saplings at subsidised rates to ensure people's participation in its efforts.

Interested citizens could register their names till the end of February in any of the BMP's horticulture offices and the saplings would be distributed in August, he said.
