City lacks strategic planning

The city’s popula tion has grown at an average of nearly three per cent in the past two decades. Simultaneously, its vehicle population — especially bikes and cars — has grown phenomenally as the IT boom has led to rising household incomes.
But Bengaluru’s infra structure hasn’t kept pace.

Lack of planning and an even worse record of implementation has caused the city to fall back in the rankings of urban development.

“The number of motor vehicles registered has already crossed three million.

Issues relating to traffic and transportation in a large and growing city such as Bengaluru need to be viewed in the larger perspective of urban planning and development.

“Issues relating to land use planning and development control, industrial clustering need to be integrated at the perspective planning level,” said researchers at the Energy and Wetland Research Group, IISc, who are conducting a study of 20 cities in India and China to study patterns of urbanisation.
