●COPS ASK BMRCL TO ENSURE MAXIMUM SAFETY FOR MOTORISTS tough action Horticulture minister Umesh Katti said that work on the Metro Rail will not be stopped at Lalbagh. He said the Metro Rail alignment has already been frozen and it cannot be changed on any technical grounds raised by the public. He said 350 saplings will be planted at various places in the city to compensate for trees felled.
With Metro Rail work steaming ahead, the city traffic police is insisting that BMRCL install ‘crash boards’ alongside pillars erected for the transit system.
The traffic cops say that the crash boards should be in place before the barricades at two locations where Metro work is underway are removed when slab-laying work is completed at these sites.
“We have been told that the slab-laying work at two short stretches will be completed in the next two weeks.
“We have insisted that crash boards be installed on these stretches before the barricades are removed so motorists are not put to risk,” said additional commissioner of police (traffic) Praveen Sood, adding that BMRCL officials had agreed to set up the crash boards.
The ACP said the barricades will be removed from Trinity Junction to Webb’s Junction and between Old Madras Road and CMH.
There is good reason for the police to emphasise on the need for crash boards to be installed before the barricades are removed, Mr Sood said, noting that the number of fatal road mishaps had come down this year when compared to previous years. He said the traffic police will not compromise on road safety and will take every measure to keep motorists safe.
BMRCL officials said that the crash board plan had yet to be finalised. “We want to provide greenery in the vacant space below the pillars. We have not yet decided, but we may have grills as crash barriers alongside the pillars,” a BMRCL official said.
