Fibre pillars spring up

Fibre pillars spring up
DH News Service, Bangalore:
About 80 new fibreglass advertisment pillars sprung up on Tuesday cutting into the footpath space on MG Road and Residency Road.
Though they are bolted to the ground, one of them fell on a car on M G Road, leading to confusion. The car driver was at a loss as to whom he should approach to claim the compensation for the loss.

To make matters worse, none of those present at the spot were in a position to give a reply as the structures had come up overnight. BBMP proposes to install 500 such pillars in the City, at a total cost of Rs 40 lakh. At some places, a private garment firm has already put up its advertisements and also flower pots.

According to BBMP sources, the pillars, each costing Rs. 8,000, were locally manufactured. BBMP had said no more licences will be issued for installing signboards till a new advertisement policy was formulated.

However, within a few days of this announcement, these apparently jarring pillars have come up.

Many onlookers were heard saying that the structures were an eyesore and not aesthetically appealing, they felt.

They were complaining that the footpaths were further shrunk by these pillars. Already, because of the ongoing Metro work, movement on MG Road has become an arduous task.
