BANGALORE: At a tree-plantation programme organised by Jayanagar 5th Block Residents Welfare Association and the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Sunday, Jayanagar MLA B N Vijayakumar said: "In the last few years, a lot of trees have been felled for the development and expansion of Bangalore. To strike a balance we need to plant more trees."

As part of the programme plans, he said over 2,500 trees will be planted across Jayanagar 5th Block, 50 trees in parks and the remaining around the area. "Apart from fruit and flowering trees, people must learn from the past experiences and maintain the existing ones. Periodic pruning of trees is very essential for its longevity and safety, especially during monsoons,"he added.

A large number of flowering, medicinal and fruit bearing tree species will be planted including Honge, Cherry, Tabubia Rosea and Neem, said a senior BBMP official.
