‘Each one, plant one’ campaign will restore greenery

‘Each one, plant one’ campaign will restore greenery

Translocate felled trees
During expansion of roads or constructions of new buildings in city limits, existing trees may be shifted to some other place instead of axing trees, even though it is a little cumbersome. I M B VENKATESH
Stop mushrooming of concrete jungles. Cutting trees should be avoided and in unavoidable circumstances, tree transplantation can be done wherever possible. I P A SUKUMARAN
Cutting trees should be the last alternative. Other alternatives like rehabilitating trees should be explored. Madras Engineering Group is safeguarding 34 trees at an expense of Rs 20,000 per tree. Such initiatives should be taken. I SAJJAN RAJ MEHTA
Strictly implement mandatory planting of saplings. Translocate trees instead of cutting them. Don’t cut trees to widen roads. Lay roads next to trees. I K SUDARSHAN RAJU
Each home should plant a tree
Start campaigns to educate people about the benefits of growing more trees. Encourage people to grow plants in their backyards and terraces. Just as we have a slogan — ‘each one teach one’ — our new slogan should be ‘each one plant one’. I USHA G RAO
Citizens need education and encouragement by the department of horticulture in raising kitchen gardens available around the houses and also in terraces. Terrace gardening will go a long way to enhance the city’s greenery. I A CHANDRASHEKHAR NAIK
There are about 7 lakh houses in the BBMP area. Make it mandatory for these houses to plant two trees in front of the house. Some house owners have killed fully grown trees in front of their houses by poisoning them with mercury just to accommodate their four-wheelers. Such people should be punished severely. I R GURU RAO
Vanamahotsava week would be celebrated throughout the state every July. It should be continued and every house should plant at least two trees where possible. I N S NAGARAJ
Make it compulsory to plant saplings in residential areas and maintain ecological balance. I N B VISHWANATH
Spread awareness among people about the importance of greenery so that they can plant at least two seeds in their backyard if space is available. I INAMDAR RAMACHANDRA
Create rooftop gardens above the existing concrete jungles after strengthening the structure. I NAGARAJ
Impose green laws on all buildings, apartments, business centres, etc. If you build, you plant. I VIA SMS
Declare a Go-Green Day like Valentine’s Day and encourage people to gift plants to the ones they love and encourage clubs, societies and schools to plant trees.
I VIA SMS
Pass a law which requires everyone to plant trees near their homes. I AKANKSHA
Corporates should create lung spaces
Encourage small businesses to plant and maintain flowering plants, shrubs and trees with a reciprocal right to display small advertisements/ posters alongside.
I THOMAS VERGHESE
There should be a rule which says that every office must set aside some space for greenery. I AKSHAY AGARWAL
Plant fresh saplings for every felled tree
The BBMP must plant double the number of trees for every tree cut for road widening, flyover construction or creating new layouts. I PRINCE NAAHAR
There is a great need for extensive afforestation in and around the city. It is time environmental activists and citizens raised their voices to ban the felling of trees. I AISHWARYA RAJAMANI
Plant saplings for every tree felled. Deforestation and afforestation should take place simultaneously. I B S RAGHAVENDRA RAO
Create awareness about trees
Inculcate the ‘each one plant one’ attitude. I MANJUNATH
BBMP and BDA must make the ‘each one grow one’ campaign compulsory. I JAGADISH KALMATH
People must have good civic sense to maintain lawns, parks and trees. Most people use public places as dustbins. I VIMALA KESARI
Government should start some contest or campaigns so people will be encouraged and plant more trees. I ATUL SHARMA
People should know that the net cooling effect of one young, healthy tree is equivalent to air-conditioners for ten rooms operating 20 hours a day. Engage highschool kids in tree-planting drives as an extra-curricular activity. I JYOTI
Maintain greenery
We need more trees and parks in the right place and they should be properly maintained. Tree roots should not damage drains. They should neither cause traffic problems nor completely mask the street light. I M N KESARI
Plants trees along medians, footpaths
Beautify footpaths and roadsides with small flowering plants. I S RAMANUJAM
Set up parks in every area with enough trees. Grow plants on roadsides. I G PADMANABHAN

Even if people don't plant trees, they can take care to look after the ones that are around. During the last two Sundays, three trees on the street I live in (BTM Layout 2nd stage) have been cut down. I learnt that it was BBMP who were cutting down the trees owing to 'precautionary measures' with the forthcoming monsoon rains in mind. They don't want the trees falling on electric lines and distrupting normal life!!!
