New deadline for speed governors

New deadline for speed governors
TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Bangalore: Transport vehicles in Karnataka must install speed governors by January 1.
In June, the previous government made speed governors mandatory for these vehicles but deferred implementation due to pressure from lorry owners and others.
Transport commissioner M Laxminarayana said all transport as well as goods-carrying vehicles must install governors, and the rule applies to old as well as new vehicles.
He said circulars had been sent all over the state. Vehicles which go for renewal of licence will need to be fitted with these governors.
As per Supreme Court and Karnataka High Court directions, all new vehicles need speed governors installed during registration itself, he said.
Transport operators are not happy about this move and plan to protest. They contend that although the SC order is binding on all states, only Karnataka insists on implementing it.
State Lorry Owners Association president GR Shanmugappa said, “This rule has not been implemented in any other state. Why is it selectively being imposed on larger vehicles? We’ll decide on our future course of action during a conference in Chitradurga on December 20,” he said.
A speed governor is a device used to control the speed of the vehicle In Karnataka, the speed limit in city limits is 35 kmph; outside city limits it’s 65 kmph
