Bangalore: A drizzle on Monday afternoon surprised many as the city had clear blue skies for the past few days.
Indian Meteorological Department director (HQ, New Delhi), B P Yadav, attributed the sudden change to the North-East Monsoon (retreating monsoon), which annually contributes about 175 mm to the 1,140 mm rainfall in Karnataka.
“The southern peninsula has come under the grip of easterly wave conditions. As a result, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, coastal Andhra Pradesh and southinterior Karnataka will receive rainfall,’’ he said.
The northerly wind has come to the state from the Bay of Bengal. Since these clouds are dry and cold, the minimum temperature might fall in the coming days, said Yadav.
“It’s normal at this time of the year. The clouds start moving from the Bay of Bengal to Arabian Sea,’’ he added. Satellite pictures taken on Monday morning showed dense clouds over the Bay of Bengal moving towards South Karnataka. They are likely to precipitate light to moderate rain in this region, including Bangalore.
Farmers in Mysore, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, Kodagu, Mangalore, Hassan and Chikmaglur have been advised to protect harvested corps and postpone harvests 10-20 mm of rainfall has been predicted.
The Met office said light rain might continue for three days.
