Withdrawal of parking facility leads to gridlock

Withdrawal of parking facility leads to gridlock
Bangalore, DHNS:
There was a virtual gridlock on Vittal Mallya Road, in front of Mallya hospital on Saturday, following the withdrawal of the temporary parking facility provided to the hospital.

The temporary facility provided by the Department of Youth Services and Sports inside Sree Kanteerava stadium premises, was withdrawn from Friday night.

Visitors were taken unawares by the sight of the closed gates of the parking lot and were left stranded. Though traffic police were quick to make alternative arrangements, it took a while for the jam to be cleared. Vehicles were then allowed to be parked on Raja Ram Mohan Roy road.

A senior police officer said that the hospital authorities should make their own arrangements for parking. Taking to Deccan Herald, DYSS Commissioner Amar Kumar Pandey said that the department wants to utilise the open space for sports activities.

“The blueprint to build a hostel is ready. The parking contract ‘lease’ period ended on Friday, and civil works will commence soon,” he added. “We are planning to have a two-storeyed parking facility and a state-of-art accommodation centre for sportspersons. It is still in intial stage and is sure to take shape in the days to come," said BBMP commissioner Subramanya.

Hospital authorities claimed that their building can accommodate nearly 40 four-wheelers in the basement. “The sudden closure has come as a shock to us. We cannot talk about it till Monday,” they said. But they refused to comment on whether it is the responsibility of the hospital to provide parking facility. Hospital CEO Indru Wadhwani said that the decision will create a najor problem for patients and their relatives. Hospital sources confirmed that they are negotiating with St Joseph’s school for parking space at the auditorium basement.

Sources said that the Information, Tourism and Youth Services secretary and the DYSS Commissioner are under tremendous pressure to hand over the piece of land to the hospital authorities. Department officials are allegedly hand in glove with other agencies while renting out space for private vehicles in the stadium.

Meanwhile, sportspersons are planning a protest against the government’s handing over the stadium land for parking. Withdrawal of parking facility leads to gridlock
