BANGALORE: Mumbai Police have come down heavily on people using mobile phones while driving.

They were sentenced to jail, slapped a penalty of Rs 1,000 and their licence was cancelled for six months for violating the traffic rule.

But the Bangalore police are planning to go for a special drive against such offenders.

Last year, the City Traffic Police had booked 29,496 cases against motorists using mobile phones. This year 10,769 cases have been registered in the City. But the police promise to intensify the drive.

‘‘We will speed up the drive against people using their cell while driving. We will also conduct special drives in different parts of the city,’’ Additional Commissioner of Police (traffic) K S Ramamurthy told this website's newspaper.

The offfender is fined Rs 100. The police work is made harder with people using ear phones and keeping tainted glass down, he said.

According to the traffic police officials, they can register cases against offenders for using mobile phone while driving under sub section(1) of Section 67 of Motor Vehicle Act.

They can charge a penalty of Rs 100.
