BANGALORE:The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has short-listed four companies for the passenger rolling stock of the metro project.

Talking about the latest development regarding the rolling stock, V Madhu, Managing Director, BMRCL, said, "four companies viz Siemens Ltd, Bombadier Transportation, BEML Ltd and Alstom Transportation have been short listed for the rolling stocks of Metro Rail. One of these companies will be selected for the design, manufacture, supply, testing and commissioning of the passenger rolling stock."

"Along with the manufacture of rolling stock, the training of personnel will be also be conducted by the selected companyd", added Madhu.

Rolling stock is the collective term that describes all the vehicles which move on a railway. It includes both powered and unpowered vehicles, for example, locomotives, railroad cars, coaches and wagons. In the case of Metro Rail, it is the passenger coaches.

The civil works on 'Reach-1' that connects Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium and Byappanahalli through M.G. Road, Trinity Circle, Ulsoor, CMH Road, Indiranagar and Old Madras Road would be completed in 27 months.

The entire digging work in the centre of MG Road which occupies about 10 meters of the road for the viaduct construction is also conducted as per schedule. The pier construction designs have also been finalised.

Metro Rail Project is worth Rs 6,400 crore and the first phase of Metro consists of two corridors of double line electrified, which will cover a total of 33 km. Bangalore Metro Rail is expected to get operational by March 2010.

*East-West Corridor will be 18.10 km long, starting from Byappanahalli and terminating at Mysore Road terminal, going via Old Madras Road, Indiranagar, C M H Road, Ulsoor, Trinity Circle, M G Road, Cricket Stadium, Vidhana Soudha, Central College, Majestic, City Railway Station, Magadi Road, Hosahalli, Vijayanagar and Deepanjali Nagar.

*North-South Corridor will be 14.90 km, beginning at Yeshwantpur Terminal and terminating at R V Road terminal going via Mahalakshmi, Rajajinagar, Kuvempu Road, Malleshwaram, Swastik, Majestic, Chikpet, City Market, K R Road, Lalbagh, South End Circle and Jayanagar.

Out of the 33 km, 6.76 km will be underground near City Railway Station, Vidhana Soudha, Majestic and City Market and the rest will be elevated.
