Bangalore: The Metro Rail in Bangalore is unlikely to affect the stability of heritage structures in the city, as the project has been planned in compliance with German standards, said B S Sudhir Chandra, director (project and planning), Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited.
Highlighting the salient aspects of the different standards adopted in planning the metro rail at the technical session of World Standards Day celebrations on Monday, he said the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) report on the impact on heritage structures due to the project is expected to be submitted soon. He added that the stringent safety measures adopted were as per international standards and that the latest technology has been adopted.
Presenting a paper on the standards specified by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board to protect environmental degradation, KSPCB chief environmental officer M D N Simha said in most situations, parties adopt reactive rather than pro-active initiatives.
Elaborating on ISO 14000, he said that environmental management, auditing, labelling, investigations and performance evaluation played a significant role in checking pollution.
The director of Consumer Rights Education Awareness Trust (CREAT) Y G Muralidharan, the chairman of Standards of Engineers India (SEI), Bangalore N Srinivasa Murthy, IT-BT, science and technology secretary M N Vidyashankar spoke on the occasion. The programme was jointly organised by the Bureau of India Standards, Bangalore branch, Karnataka state centre of Institution of Engineers and the Institute of standards Engineers.
