No deadline for road repairs: Ashok

No deadline for road repairs: Ashok
Bangalore, DHNS:
Bumpy ride has become the order of the day with hundreds of potholes cropping up on the City roads which are badly damaged due to heavy rains.

Though BBMP is making efforts to find a solution, no initiative taken to repair the roads which are in tatters. What has Minister R Ashok, who is also in-charge of Bangalore, have to say?
What is the extent of damage to roads due to rains?
Roads are badly damaged. However, the damage has not been assessed as yet. A number of potholes has surfaced, which need to be filled.
Besides, a lot of slush and mud have accumulated on many roads making them unsafe to drive.
Even newly-laid roads have been damaged.
I have directed BBMP officials to find out. If it is because of sub-standard work, contractors will be held responsible. They will be asked to repair the damage. Since maintenance of roads is one of the contract conditions, contractors should stick to it. I have directed BBMP officials to ensure these contractors repair and restore damaged roads.
Is there any time-frame for restoring roads?
No, I have not set a deadline as the City is likely to receive more rains. Restoration work will be taken up on a large-scale once it completely stops raining. However, BBMP will continue its regular pothole- filling work.
BBMP Chief Engineer Gopalaswamy
Why do roads get damaged every time it rains?
Roads are damaged due to water-logging and flooding.
What is the extent of damage to roads?
I have directed engineers to submit a report on number of potholes in their jurisdiction. Based on the report, we will set a deadline to fill them up. BBMP has despatched three barrels of tar to each ward to take up pothole-filling work.
Will you ask contractors to restore damaged roads?
Of course, maintenance is one of the conditions.
When can motorists expect a smooth ride?
All potholes will be filled up in 15 days.
