Flood-shed a 15-yr-old problem

Flood-shed a 15-yr-old problem
DH News Service, Bangalore:
Rain-related problems are not new to residents of Puttenahalli, VI Phase, JP Nagar. As the city grew and new buildings came up, problems increased. For the last 15 years, residents of Puttenahalli have been facing the same problem, BBMP chief engineer (south) B T Ramesh said.

The area, which was earlier a part of Bommanahalli CMC, is situated in the downstream of Sarakki tank. Residents neither get Cauvery water nor have a proper underground drainage system. The water collected during rains can’t escape. The area designated for storm-water drain has been encroached upon by multi-storey buildings which obstruct flow of water.
“The problem with Puttenahalli is it is situated next to Sarakki tank. Water collected in the tank has to flow towards Puttenahalli. As there is no separate UGD line, drainage pits overflow during rains. Unless steps are taken to allow free flow of rainwater, the problem can’t be solved,” Mr Ramesh said.
Mr S Venkatesha Reddy, who has given his seven buildings on rent to industries, alleged that lack of planning by then Bommanahalli CMC is the root-cause of the problem. “Officers have failed to find a way out for water collected in Sarakki tank. Though people have been suffering for many years, they have not been able to construct a drain to make flow into Madivala tank.”
V Anand, a daily wage worker whose house was inundated, said: “This is nothing new. Even a short spell of showers makes our lives miserable. A permanent solution is necessary.”
Mr Ramesh said the Palike has taken a stern action against unauthorised structures. “We have demolished 10 buildings in the drain area. Now, water has receded. The Palike will soon take up construction of a drain and provide a permanent solution to the problem.
