Now, the visitors at Lalbagh can cycle through the garden, with the Horticulture department launching eco-friendly electric cycles on a rent basis.
Those who cannot walk around the garden can now take resort to these electric cycles run by battery, by paying Rs 100 per hour.
The department has left four of these pollution-free cycles on an experimental basis.
They took a formal take-off on Tuesday, the World Environment Day and already have become very busy. The crew is keeping the bi-cycles charged with power for eight hours through the night and are running without rest all the day.
Available
They are similar to regular cycles except that they need not be pedalled, but if the battery turns down there is an option for pedalling too. They would be available at a spot fixed for them near the hillock reachable from the Double Road entrance of Lalbagh.
Bought at a cost of Rs 15,600 each from Youth Bikes company, these cycles are an addition to the four 8-eight seater Maini electic vehicles already available in Lalbagh.
The 8-seaters take visitors at a fee of Rs 100 per head and take a round on a scheduled route, while the new cycles can give a visitor, a peaceful ride across the greens in blissful solitude.
