BANGALORE: Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Shipping T.R. Baalu on Wednesday advised Chief Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy to implement the metro rail project early.

Increase in traffic

"Such is the massive increase in Bangalore city's traffic that its road development is saturated. Now, it is not possible to tackle the increasing traffic problems through the road development alone. It is time the Bangalore Metro Rail project is implemented," the Minister remarked at a joint press conference in which the Chief Minister was present.

He said the traffic density in Bangalore had touched an average of 1.30 lakh passenger car units (PCU).

In fact, the eastern part of Bangalore linking the Electronics City had reported a density of 1.67 lakh PCUs, Mr. Baalu said, and added that the fast-paced growth in Bangalore city's traffic had created anxiety among the policy makers.

Congestion

Although several road development projects were taken up, the traffic was increasing at a fast pace leading to congestion, he said and stressed the need to implement the metro rail project along with the road development work.
