BDA plunges into lake cleaning drive

BANGALORE: As part of the World Environment Day celebrations, the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) on Sunday organised the cleaning of Benniganahalli Lake.
The lake is situated next to Benninganahalli Flyover on Outer Ring Road, near Pai Layout.
Various educational institutions and NGOs participated in the cleanliness drive, apart from the BDA’s forest department.
They included New Horizon School, Indiranagar; Christ College, St Paul’s Educational Society, K K School and Pai Layout Residents Welfare Association.
Speaking on the occasion, BDA Commissioner M K Shankarlinge Gowda said all the lakes falling under the BDA’s jurisdiction will be maintained by the BDA so that people can visit them in their leisure time.
“We have also taken the initiative to rejuvenate, maintain and beautify Jakkur Lake and Rachanahalli Lake. It is important to involve children and youth into such programmes as they a play vital role in creating awareness among people and maintaining the environment,” he said.
Gowda said the BDA would strive to maintain the joggers parks and other lung spaces and recreational spots in the upcoming BDA layouts in the City.
“Lung spaces need to be maintained. The BDA will sponsor all the environment programmes in its areas,” he said.
The authority plans to take up the task of clearing all the domestic, plastic, sewerage and paper waste, apart from clearing the weeds and beautifying the lakes.
Lake Development Authority (LDA) chief executive officer (CEO) B K Singh was present.
