Trees are the first victims of development

Trees are the first victims of development

Bangalore, all know, has shed its sobriquet the ‘Garden City’ long ago.

Many see this as a result of the advancing concrete and the retreating green cover. It, therefore, came as a welcome relief when the Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy asked officials to ensure that bare minimum trees are cut for the rail and other developments.

Many thinking citizens believe the rise in city temperature is owing to the loss of trees and gardens. The authorities and the government today are little concerned about saving the green life savers of Bangalore.

Trees are the first victims of any development, be it a flyover, a road widening or metro or mono rail, the trees are chopped brutally.

As the city expands, the need of the hour is more lung spaces on the lines of Cubbon Park and Lalbagh. City planners should have a long-term foresight and save our Garden City.

The continued struggle and cry by environmentalists to save the city’s green canopy seems to be falling on deaf years.
