Tree translocation along Metro route

Tree translocation along Metro route
TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Bangalore: The countdown has began for the line of trees which will be felled for the Metro rail project. However, a lucky few will survive, say BMRC sources.
After the BMRC’s effort to compensate for the loss of green cover by promoting and funding sapling p l a n t at i o n across the city, efforts are on to counter the protests by the green brigade with modern technology.
“We are considering a technique of translocation of trees where the trees will be uprooted, shifted and replanted at the adjacent Manekshaw Parade Ground. At least 16 trees have qualified for the process as they are bountiful and have people’s sentiments attached to them. The Army has agreed in principle to such an arrangement,’’ said a BMRC
official.
The list of trees to undergo translocation include tabubia, pongamia, mahogany, goni, bhadraksha, jamun, mango and banyan.
The final word on translocation will be out on Monday, after the Metro’s environmental advisory committee, headed by environmentalist Yellappa Reddy, will study the merits of trees selected, cost of translocation and the chances of their survival among other aspects.
