Moral police were on the prowl in the City late on Saturday night. A little after the stroke of the midnight, scores of activists of a little-known organisation, the Karnataka Yuva Vedike, attacked the Athena pub at The Leela Palace, Airport Road here and ransacked the premises.

The activists, sporting red and yellow headbands and waving Kannada flags, shouted slogans as they barged into the star hotel and reached the pub in the basement without any resistance.

Entering the pub, the activists asked customers to leave the premises. When a bartender questioned them, pat came the reply from the self-appointed custodians of morality: “The pub culture is not our culture and our tradition is going down the drain. Youngsters have taken to drugs."

A few customers entered into heated arguments with the activists. Bottles and tables were broken in the melee. In less than 20 minutes, the pub was empty as couples with bottles in hand, ran helter-skelter. Boys were seen whisking away their girlfriends to safety and within seconds cars vroomed out of the hotel’s parking lobby.

By then police arrived. The activists were picked up by the men in uniform and taken to CAR, South.
