BMTC gearing up to build traffic-transport centres

BMTC gearing up to build traffic-transport centres
By Bala Chauhan DH News Service Bangalore:
The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is in the process of acquiring 334 acres of land in the City for building traffic and transport management centres (TTMCs).

The multi-facility centres will have bus stations, depots and transport hubs. They will also offer park-and-ride and commercial facilities to the public.

The BMTC will acquire these lands from BDA in a year’s time, at the junctions of the radial roads and peripheral Rings Roads such as Tumkur Road, Mysore Road, Kanakapura Road and Bannerghatta Road for constructing 13 such facilities.

“We need to expand our transit base with the growing needs of the City. Apart from areas under the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagar Palike , we also need to operate in the Bangalore Metropolitan Regional Development Authority areas. Right now, there’s not enough place to park the BMTC buses.

Metro link

The expansion plans are also pegged at the future growth of Bangalore with other modes of transport such as mono rail and metro rail becoming a reality,” said BMTC Managing Director Upendra Tripathy.

“The TTMCs, built on an area of around 20 acres of land, will also provide connectivity to mono and metro rail,” said Mr K S Vishwanath, Chief Traffic Manager, BMTC,” he added.

Notification issued

The BDA has already issued a notification for the acquisition of land on Tumkur Road-Hosur Road stretch. With a fleet of 4,326 buses, the Corporation is faced with serious space constraint.

“Our buses don’t have enough parking facility, that is why they are often parked on the road sides. For instance, in Jayanagar where we have 3,000 trips per day we have only 38 guntas of land for the depot. In JP Nagar, there’s no parking place for the buses,” said Mr Tripathy.
