The proposed underground tunnel from Minsk Square to BDA office near Cauvery junction is part of the North Corridor improvement scheme. “A team of engineers is preparing a detailed project report on making this an engineering marvel.
Since an earlier project on the same lines did not materialise, we are proposing to construct the tunnel,’’ BBMP officials said.
The earlier proposal was to improve the stretch from Hebbal Junction to Minsk Square with a futuristic approach in terms of increase in vehicular traffic and related developments by 2023. The project covered the overall development of the 7.1-km corridor starting from Minsk Square to Hebbal Junction encompassing 13 junctions.
The corridor along with the two roads was to be widened to a six-lane carriageway, along with integrated developments such as construction of parking and bus-bays, remodelling of pavements, automated and synchronised traffic signals, remodelling of storm water drains, installation of ducts, construction of grade separator and pedestrian subways.
The main component of the project was widening of Windsor Manor bridge.
The project involved land acquisition to a tune of 29,000 sq mtrs and the project cost estimated was Rs 20 crore. However, a major hitch was the fully grown trees, which dots the corridor.
According to the consultants’ report, the stretch from Minsk Square to Hebbal Junction has 764 trees, of which 423 trees had to be felled for the project.
