BANGALORE: Bangalore's dream project — the Rs. 6,400-crore Metro Rail scheme — has received an allocation of Rs. 172.88 crore in the Budget. Work on the project will begin by the end of March.

With this, the funding for the project goes up to Rs. 409.88 crore. The allocation is part of the commitment of the two Governments to give Rs. 3,600 crore to the project over five years. Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. has plans to spend nearly Rs. 800 crore a year.

BMRCL Managing Director V. Madhu said cash flow was not a problem for the project. The project will incur heavy expenditure only when it starts paying for the land acquisition. This could begin some time in May or June.
