One of the city’s oldest cinema houses, the Puttanna Kanagal theatre, is all set to transform into a multiplex and a commercial complex. But the change will come about, only after the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) studies the feasibility report. What more, the Jayanagar Shopping Complex, housing the theatre, will also get a facelift.

BMP Commissioner K Jairaj on Tuesday, asked the technical advisor and deputy commissioner (market) to prepare a feasibility report, based on the design, construction, maintenance and transfer of a commercial complex to be considered for a public-private partnership project.

The Commissioner has already made a overall review and said that a multiplex will be built in the place of the present film theatre. While, the ground, first and second floors of the complex will be used for vehicle parking, the basement and the first floor will house film theatres, which will screen award-winning films. The rest of the floors will be used for commercial utility purposes. This complex will be built on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis, to augment revenue. The adjoining buildings - Janata Bazar and Canara Bank - might get one or two additional floors, which will help increase the revenue from the current Rs 1.25 crore to Rs 2.5 crore annually.
