BANGALORE: Garbage collection is likely to be hit in the western parts of the city from Wednesday because the lorries that lifted the waste from these areas in the last two days have not been able to dispose of them till late on Tuesday night.

About 60 lorries loaded with 300 tonnes of garbage have lined up near the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike Deputy Commissioner (West) office on Sampige Road in Malleswaram and on the nearby Jakkarayanekere tank bed from Monday, as the owner of the land, where the garbage was being dumped till now, has refused permission for dumping.

Some lorries that had entered the two-acre private land in Mavallipura on Tuesday have been stranded there, as the owner did not allow them to dump or move out. The vehicles were able to come out through another route only in the evening.

According to the private garbage contractors, this is likely to hit clearance and disposal of waste generated in Rajajinagar, Mahalakshmipuram, Chamarajpet, Chickpet, Malleswaram, Gandhinagar and parts of Yeshwanthpur from Wednesday.

"Unless the lorries dispose of the accumulated waste, Wednesday's collection cannot be transported. If the BMP works out an alternative, it may take two days for the situation to become normal," general secretary of the Bangalore Mahanagara Swachate Lorry Maalikara Mattu Guttigedarara Sangha S. Balasubramaniam said.

BMP Joint Commissioner (West) M A Khalid told The Hindu that the civic body was trying to work out a solution.

"We are forced to succumb to the pressure tactics of the land owner because another piece of land where garbage was dumped earlier is under litigation. We have agreed to pay Rs. 75,000 a month as ground rent to the owner and the cheque will be released on Wednesday and we are hopeful of solving the problem," Mr Khalid said.

More than 350 lorries are deployed to transport the city's daily garbage of 2,200 tonnes.
