The City traffic police will soon install 50 surveillance cameras at major junctions to monitor and regulate traffic. This is part of the ambitious B-Track project proposed to decongest traffic.

The department has conducted a pilot project by installing cameras at the Coffee Board and Manipal Hospital junctions. "These cameras will help manage traffic better, especially on the busy Airport Road. We can also spot illegal parking, including parking on pavements, breakdowns on any lanes and pedestrian movement," DCP (traffic, east) M A Saleem said.

The cameras are connected to the traffic control room via the Internet.

The police have identified 25 places for installing these cameras and link them to a Central Command Centre, which will monitor images and suggest corrective steps to the police teams. In the next three months, 25 cameras are expected to be installed.
