Come 2009 and motorists travelling by the Tumkur road to reach Bangalore or vice versa may breathe easy. The National Highway-4 stretch from Yeshwanthpur to Nelamangala, known for traffic jams lasting up to midnight everyday, will have an elevated highway which will be completed by 2009. This will cut the travel time between the two places to 15 minutes from the present 90 to 120 minutes.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has drawn up an ambitious plan to construct a 4.5 km-long flyover on this road. The elevated highway, which will be accesscontrolled and tolled, will begin at CMTI junction near the ring road and will culminate near the Widia factory.

NHAI officials told VViijjaay yTTiim mees sthat the Union Government had already cleared the project and tenders had been invited. The contract will be awarded in December. The process of financial closure will take around four months. The Rs 430-crore project will kick off in April 2007 and will be completed in 24 months’ time.

Apart from this, the existing road will be upgraded. The current four-lane highway from ring road to Hesaraghatta cross will have service roads on either side while the fourlane highway between Hesaraghatta cross and Nelamangala will be upgraded to a six-lane highway with two additional service roads. The NHAI has also proposed to construct six underpasses to ease traffic — at Chikbidarakal-Jindal, TCI junction, Dasanapura, Nelamangala bypass, Nelamanagala-Magadi road and Nelamangala-Mangalore road junction.

Once it is completed, Bangalore will have the distinction of having a second elevated highway along with a few other cities in the country.
