BANGALORE: The Bangalore city police stepped up enforcement of the new helmet rule on Tuesday by booking 3,400 motorists who were riding without a helmet. The squads positioned at junctions and busy roads were seen singling out violators during the day.

Though the new rule came into force on Nov 1, the police had decided to focus on spreading awareness for the first few days. About 821 motorists were booked on Monday, when enforcement began. While a violation attracts a Rs 100 fine, a repeated offence could cost Rs 300.

The police will keep up the momentum of strict enforcement, DCP Traffic (East) M A Saleem told this website's newspaper. According to him, a majority of motorists wear helmets and the police hope the sustained drives will ensure that the remaining will comply.

A fatal road accident reported on Monday involved a scooterist who apparently was carrying his helmet but not wearing it. Babu (42) an automobile parts dealer in J C Nagar had filled petrol on Dr Marigowda Road near Lalbagh and was heading to his shop when a BMTC bus crashed head-on into his vehicle. Babu had strapped his helmet onto his scooter’s seat, police said.

Meanwhile, the traffic police are planning to conduct drives to check the sale of sub-standard helmets. Additional Commissioner (Traffic) M N Reddi on Tuesday said that the police would carry out the drive along with the legal metrology department.
