Bangalore's `green project' to begin soon

Bangalore's `green project' to begin soon
The Hindu

BANGALORE: Can the Garden City regain its sobriquet and perhaps, even have patches of urban forests again?

The answer may be ``yes'' if the Biodiversity Management Committee can implement its far-reaching plans for the city's environment. The BMC was formed barely two months ago by the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike and is headed by former Special Secretary to the Government for Environment and Forests A.N.Yellapa Reddy. The committee's plans will be implemented over a five-year period, if approved.

According to Mr. Reddy, the city had several groves till a few decades ago, as shown by many neighbourhoods even now enjoying a ``garden'' in their names at least. Plants with air purifying qualities have been identified .

Work on this ``green project'' may begin in earnest by year-end.
