Bangalore: The Bangalore Traffic Improvement Project 2010 (BTRAC 2010) is aimed at improving traffic management and traffic policing in the city.

Karnataka Road Development Corporation Ltd. (KRDCL) will implement the project.

Police Commissioner Neelam Achutha Rao and Managing Director of KRDCL Ramesh Bindurao Jalki signed a memorandum of understanding in this regard here on Wednesday.

Funds

The cost of BTRAC 2010, which is spread over five years from 2006-07 to 2010-1, has been put at Rs. 350 crore. The Government has earmarked Rs. 44 crore for the project this year.

The project provides for setting up of 200 modern signals that will be interconnected to an area traffic control system as part of the overall intelligent transportation system.

The signals will be dynamically operated based on the traffic flow as well as the command issued from the central computer for optimising signal timings for systematic flow of traffic on major corridors and in the central areas of the city.

The other components include junction improvements, road marking, street-furniture, education and capacity building of traffic police.

125 traffic signals

For 2006-07, the project envisages setting up of 125 such traffic signals in the central areas, establishment of a modern traffic management centre and deployment of traffic monitoring cameras at 50 locations, setting up of variable messaging systems to guide the public in times of traffic congestion and diverting the traffic to other roads.

Cameras

Traffic enforcement cameras will be deployed for tackling signal jumping and over-speeding.
