Dedicated auto lane eases traffic

Dedicated auto lane eases traffic

Bangalore: The unruly movement of autorickshaws in the chock-ablock Majestic area will soon be reduced to the footnotes of history, thanks to a dedicated auto lane being implemented on Tank Bund Road around the Kempe Gowda Bus Stand.

This has made qualitative difference in the traffic movement in the Majestic area, which is a hub that connects others parts of the city to the main bus stand.
The dedicated auto lane has been marked from Elite Hotel Junction to the bus stand. Beginning this week, the Upparpet traffic police have put up barricades with unique signages on the Tank Bund Road to create a dedicated lane for autos which block movement of bigger vehicles such as buses. The move undertaken by the police is to facilitate the speedy movement of buses around the congested Kempe Gowda bus stand in the Majestic area. The traffic policemen have taken positions on the busy road, guiding the autorickshaw drivers to move only along the dedicated lane.

This dedicated lane is aimed at helping faster movement of BMTC and KSRTC buses around the bus stand. “Slow-moving vehicles such as autorickshaws come in the way of bigger vehicles and reduce the average speed of other vehicles on the road.

This leads to congestion and affects arrival and departure schedule of buses at Majestic. Dedicated lane for autorickshaws will bring relief,’’ a senior police officer said.

The traffic police have created dedicated lanes for autorickshaws on 12 arterial roads of the city, including the busy K G Road. The first dedicated lane for autorickshaws was created on M G Road in 2002.
