Weeds, garbage occupy major part of Uttarahalli Lake

Weeds, garbage occupy major part of Uttarahalli Lake

THE Garden City of Bangalore, which once boasted of having a number of lakes, now has only a few of these water bodies left.

What is more, of those that are left, some are in a pretty bad shape.

The Uttarahalli lake, found sandwiched between the Uttarahalli Main Road and Kengeri, is one such water body that is on the verge of drying up.

The lake, which is filled with weeds, has not been desilted till date. Moreover, the stench emenating from the polluted water adds to the discomfort of those in the vicinity of the lake.

Thanks to garbage-filled lorries dumping their cargo on the banks of the lake, the size of the lake seems to be getting smaller and smaller day-byday.

One other reason for water being polluted is the improper drainage system in Uttarahalli. The improper system has led to a situation where sewerage water flows into the lake.

Some factories located on the banks of the lake have been releasing their effluents into the lake and this has led to a rise in the level of pollution.

Residents associations in nearby areas have already appealed to the government in this regard. They have urged the government to restore the sewerage system in order to prevent factory effluents being let into the lake.

The associations have also suggested that the garbage found on the banks of the lake be cleared. They have pointed out that the lake could be used to lure birds from different places and could be turned into a bird sancutary, if desilting work is carried out.
