INTENT on making the most of the monsoon that has set in, authorities of the Horticulture Department are gearing up to sow more seeds and grow more plants.

"The weather, with a spell of rain every now and then, is ideal for sowing seeds," confirmed officials of the Horticulture Department.

WEATHER EFFECT

"The Horticulture Department is concentrating on improving the garden by introducing more plants here as the weather is now perfect for growing plants," Lalbagh Deputy Director M Jagdish said.

"We have lost several trees in the garden because of degradation over the years. The heavy rains last year added to that. We have spotted eight to 10 areas in Lalbagh where we need to sow seeds and grow plants," he said.

FILLING GAPS

"We are planning to plant saplings on either side of the approach road at Lalbagh. There are a few gaps between the rows of plants and we are trying to fill these up by planting more trees," said Jagdish.

"Goldiana is one of the species that we plan to add. However, we have not decided on the other species, as of now," he added.

"The weather is also ideal for manuring plants and we are concentrating on that area as well," informed Jagdish.

Public turn out low at mela

However, due to the cloudy weather, the number of visitors to the mango mela, that will continue till June 2, has come down. "We are not getting as many visitors as expected for the mela because of continuous rains,"Jagdish said.
