The crime rate in Bangalore in the first quarter of 2006 was low in comparison with the previous year, according to Bangalore Police Commissioner Ajai Kumar Singh.

Releasing the crime statistics in the City for the last three months, he said that incidents of crime under categories like murder, murder for gain and dacoity have come down. The overall crime rate has also come down, he said.

There were 46 murders reported till the end of March when compared to 56 last year.

Three murder for gain cases were reported in 2006 against two in 2005 and there were nine dacoity cases this year as against 6 last year, he said.

Mr Singh said that there were 2,294 property offences like theft, chain-snatching and robbery cases reported this year as compared to the 2,712 cases last year.

The City police has recovered property worth Rs 5.27 crore against Rs 3.34 crore last year, he added.

In the accidents category, 197 fatal accidents were reported this year against 218 cases last year and 211 persons were killed in different parts of the City as against 232 persons, he said.

Scorpio case

The task of investigating into the hit-and-run case involving a Scorpio which killed Sub-Inspector Arun Kumar has been entrusted to the City Crime Branch police, Mr Singh said. There are too many contradictory evidences in the case, he said.

The case was earlier handled by the City Traffic Police.
