Traffic jams on MG Road may become a thing of the past, thanks to a new initiative by the City traffic police. With plans afoot for synchronisation of the six traffic signals on the road, the stretch between Trinity Circle and Queen’s Circle could become a no-halt traffic zone. In the synchronised system, a green signal at one end of the road means vehicles can go without halting at signal stops. The synchronised system is expected to be ready by the first week of May.
Talking to Deccan Herald, Deputy Police Commissioner (East) M A Saleem said, “In the synchronised system, at the starting and ending points of the road — Trinity Circle and Queen’s Circle — the first 40-60 vehicles will get a green signal and as they proceed through the rest of the junctions, the red signal will be delayed in such a manner that they pass the stretch at one go.”
The installation work, costing Rs 38 lakh, is sponsored by Vijaya Bank under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) programme and the technology is being provided by Bharat Electronics (BE).
The installation work is expected to be complete by late April. The police will take another two weeks to test the synchronised timings.
More than 6,000 vehicles pass through the road every hour and the new system is billed to save more than five minutes for the vehicle users. Police had earlier synchronised the traffic signals on JC Road. They are also looking for similar PPP ventures in setting up synchronised lights at all the 180 traffic junctions in the City.
