Following confusion among citizens about the revised minimum distance for autorickshaws, the Regional Transport Authority has decided to retain the minimum distance as two kilometres against the revised 1.6 km.

In a press release on Tuesday, the RTA has stated that beginning March 15, the revised minimum fare would be Rs 12 for a minimum distance of two kilometres.

The decision to retain the minimum distance as two kilometres was taken after there was confusion in the revised minimum fare being Rs 10 even after calibration while the minimum distance was 1.6 km.

The contention was that people may be cheated in autos with analogue meters as analogue meters do not display the distance. With people having no way of ascertaining whether the meters have been recalibrated, auto drivers could demand extra fare for three months.

Passengers are required to pay Rs 12 as the minimum fare for a distance of two kilometres on the auto meter, the release stated. If the meter displays Rs 10 as the minimum fare, passengers can refer to the fare conversion chart and pay accordingly.

The deadline for recalibration of meters is three months from March 15 and there are no changes in other revisions and conditions, the release added.
