Former mayor P R Ramesh has appealed to Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy to reconsider the decision to increase the height of the proposed ‘Freedom Tower’ and to locate it in Palace Grounds or General Cariappa Park.

Mr Ramesh, in a letter to the chief minister, said that the Freedom Tower which is billed to be the largest of its kind in the world, is best located at the Freedom Park designed to come up in the Old Central Jail premises, as per the original plan.

He has noted that the decision to increase the height of the tower and to change the location taken at a meeting called by the Secretary, Agriculture and Horticulture, in July 2005 were based on incorrect information.

Based on a news report in a TV channel, the meeting had compared the proposed height of the tower - 560 meters - with a 800-meter-high skyscraper under construction in Dubai; the difference between a tower and a skyscraper was missed out, Mr Ramesh said.

From tourism and heritage point of view, it is better to retain the tower as a part of the overall Freedom Park project, Mr Ramesh opined.
