BANGALORE: The Ananda Rao Circle flyover, instead of easing traffic, has added to the chaos. A traffic bottleneck has been caused at the Maharani junction and KR Circle. There have also been cases of traffic jams on the flyover itself.

According to some police officers, a flyover is never recommended in the central business district. “The police had maintained that there was no need for a flyover here. But we were not heard,” a police officer said.

The traffic snarls at the flyover have given a tough time to the police.

They are forced to increase the duration of traffic lights, after which the traffic congestion eases. “We have increased the duration of the lights at Maharani junction and KR Circle by 20 seconds. This has restored normalcy,” DCP Traffic (West) Basavraj Malghatti said.

The flyover has not only attracted commuters who want to reach faster, but also those who want to watch the race at the Race Course from the flyover. Blocking the view of the Race Course will ease traffic congestion. “Commuters stop to enjoy the view. We have asked the Bangalore Development Authority to block the view and they have agreed,” Malghatti said.

But the flyover has not brought any relief to regular commuters. “It took me half an hour to cross the flyover. The vehicles move at a snail’s pace. It was much better without the flyover,” Ashwini, a regular commuter said.

Anjaneya Gowda, another commuter said the flyover has brought more problems. “We had to first put up with the dust and diversions, during the construction of the flyover. Now we have to bear the inconvenience caused by the completed flyover for the rest of our lives,” he said.
