Pay and park scheme to be re-introduced

Pay and park scheme to be re-introduced

For all purposes, the pay and park scheme will be back in Bangalore. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike and the City Traffic Police are scheduled to meet soon to list out the roads where the scheme may be re-introduced, official sources told Deccan Herald on Monday.

Mayor Mumtaz Begum noted “the traffic police have told us that illegal collections are on.

The shopping malls in the city collect a minimum Rs 10 or more for parking. The public who are willing to pay there should not really object when paying for our space.”

Discussion

It is learnt that at the official level the BMP and City traffic police have already discussed some nuances of the new measure.

There shall be no scope for any motive of parking contractors; computerised parking system like the one presently seen on Brigade Road may be introduced everywhere, sources said.

The maximum time allowed and the fee charged may vary depending on the traffic load on the said road, they observed.

Showcause notice

‘The government recently sent ‘a show cause notice’ to the BMP saying that it has ‘cancelled’ the BMP Council’s decision providing for fee-free parking in the city.

The government’s decision is not so much about the revenue loss suffered by the BMP - as pointed out by the administrators, but a matter of regulating the parking and traffic in the city, sources noted.

Measure

It was further noted that there is nothing surprising about the government’s decision as the traffic police all along expressed unhappiness over the free parking measure.

Meanwhile the BMP council at its meeting on Saturday was politically divided on the issue with the BJP wanting government to re-consider the re-introduction of parking fee.

When contacted on Monday a senior Bharatiya Janata Party minister in the new JD(S)-coalition government said that he will take up the matter with Urban Development Secretary.
