P G R Sindhia, Finance, Industries and Infrastructure Development Minister, on Wednesday said the work on the Bangalore International Airport could be completed ahead of the scheduled April 2008 deadline.
Delivering the inaugural address at Aerodrome India 2005, an international exhibition and seminar on airport infrastructure and security, the minister said the upcoming airport in Devanahalli was expected to be ready by January 2008. He also urged the Centre to declare the Mangalore Domestic Airport as an international airport in the wake of the enhancement of airport infrastructure.
“Two more domestic airports will come up in Karnataka — in Hassan and Gulbarga. The Centre has already cleared the Mysore airport project and approved the expansion proposal for airports in Hubli and Belgaum,” he said. He called upon the Centre to develop the Jindal Group-owned Thorangal private airstrip to help Hampi-bound tourists. Mr Sindhia said the State Government would provide land for setting up a first-of-its-kind University for Aerospace Technology in Bangalore. The proposal for the project has been made by the Society of Indian Aerospace Technologies and Industries. The UGC is also part of the project, which will train students for non-engineering jobs and services required at airports.
Aerodrome India 2005 is on at Palace Grounds (Freeway 19 entrance) till December 10.
