20 highrises to face the axe

Bangalore: Armed with the government order, the Task Force for eviction of encroachment of drains, valleys and tank beds will come down on the structures and the first set of buildings that will face the axe are the 20 highrise buildings, commercial complexes and software houses which have protruded into the valleys by draining the water bed.
The Task Force, headed by BDA

commissioner M N Vidyashankar, which met on Tuesday to decide on the action plan, has decided to demolish the structures and the exercise will begin shortly. The buildings belong to big-banner constructions houses and a few software firms.

“Since the buildings have been put up on government properties, we need not issue notices informing them about the demolition. We wanted to tackle the big fishes first and then move on to small fries,’’ officials told The Times of India.
According to the findings, Puttenahalli lake is the worst affected as its catchments have been encroached upon. Next is Begur lake and Hebbal valley.

For instance: A software firm located in a CMC has constructed its building on the canal by draining the water bed. To add to the violation, it is currently putting up two additional floors without sanctions.

The task force was formed following the rains and deluge where it came to light that the large scale encroachment of valleys and drains was the primary reason for flooding. The task force which conducted a survey on the water bodies has found that the major violators are high-rise buildings owned by reputed builders.

The government, in its order issued on November 3, has stated that the task force should demolish the structures that have come up on water beds blocking the flow of water and then take up repair of drains.

What the govt order says

•The task force should review the proposal for rejection of sanctions to the construction of high-rise buildings situated in low lying areas of BMP and CMCs.

•The task force should also go through the proposal for rejection of approvals for buildings without basements and those built on stilts near the drain and valley beds.

•Removal of encroachments on lake and tank beds.

NO NOTICES WILL BE ISSUED BEFORE DEMOLITION
