Farmers and residents can apply for legal remedial action

BANGALORE: Farmers will not be given any additional compensation by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) for acquisition of lands for the Arkavathy Layout, said BDA Commissioner, M.N. Vidyashankar, on Tuesday.

Speaking to presspersons on the sidelines of a visit to a BDA water treatment plant in Cubbon Park by Lokayukta N. Venkatachala, the BDA Commissioner said the development authority was not entitled to raise the compensation amount. He said farmers and residents of the area demanding higher compensation could apply for legal remedial action under the Land Acquisition Act. "We have no provisions to increase the compensation," he said.

Mr. Vidyashankar said the BDA was planning to promote water sports in the four lakes, Hebbal, Jakkur, Rachenahalli and Nagavara, that fall within the boundaries of the layout. "It is an idea. We still have not drawn up any plan," he said.

The BDA Commissioner said the preliminary notification for 3,800 acres of land for the peripheral ring road would be issued shortly. The BDA has issued notification for more than 1,962 acres of land. Work on the peripheral ring road, he said, will commence in June. It will be completed within three years.
