Clutch on to your winter clothes with all your might, if the readings from the Meteorological Department are anything to go by.

According to them, the biting cold that has been pervading in Bangalore for the last 24 hours will continue to make its presence felt for a couple of days more.

According to officials at the Meteorological Centre, the dip in the temperature scale to 13.7 deg C, largely due to the persistent cold dry winds from North prevailing over Bangalore, will continue for the next 48 hours.

“This time, the winter seems to have begun early with the plunging temperatures. “Earlier, Bangalore used to touch 13 deg C only by the end of November. This year, the winter has arrived early,” the official explained. The winter in Bangalore is expected to last till January 15. In mid-December, the temperature could even be as low as 11 deg C.

With the onset of winter, hospitals across the City are also witnessing a rise in the number of patients being treated for respiratory problems. According to Dr Mahesh Babu, an ENT specialist, the change in climatic condition has brought in its wake a series of infections.

Dr Sudha Menon, the chief of Preventive Health at Sagar Apollo, said the number of asthma patients streaming into the hospital has also increased. “Out of every 10 patients, at least six of them were suffering from respiratory ailments. The smog effect and the cold condition is not helping matters either,” she added.

Fighting a cold war

Use tissues rather than a hankie for your runny nose, and dispose of the tissues in the bin after using them.

Wash your hands, especially after sneezing or blowing your nose.

Avoid smoking, as it will only irritate your mucus membrane even more.

If you sleep with your head high up on a couple of

pillows, you should be able to breathe more easily at night.
