Good roads remain on paper

Good roads remain on paper
The Times of India

Bangalore: Downpour, central teams, inspections, meetings, project announcements and deadlines... And everything comes to a standstill.

Work on the battered roads of Bangalore is yet to begin, though some patch work on potholes is being carried out, here and there. Nearly 90% of the city roads have become the victims of recent downpour. The BMP has allocated Rs 2 crore to each of the 14 executive engineers’ sub-divisions for road restoration.

Traffic jam is the order of the day due to slow movement of traffic, thanks to bad roads. Even the arterial roads are no exception.

Adding to the chaos is the blocking of one-side of the road to take up drain works. For instance, work on a drain is being carried on Double Road due to which vehicles have to move in a zig-zag way. The road is jammed during peak hours despite a flyover there.

For the record, the government has announced its grandiose comprehensive action plan for the rain-battered Bangalore which will mainly concentrate on reconstruction of damaged roads, drains and sanitary lines. And the BMP was supposed to take up road repair works on a war footing.

Thankfully, work on the upgradation of four roads (out of 19 roads identified by IT honchos) has begun. Work on these roads — Airport Road from 100 Feet Road junction to Suranjan Das Road; JB Nagar 12th Main Road; MG Road from Brigade Road junction to Trinity Circle and Dickenson Road — will be done by December-end. BMP on the job

BMP has taken up restoration work of Silver Jubilee Park, which was damaged due to recent rain.

The BMP, in a release, has said the work will be executed without breaks. A drive is taken to fill all the potholes in arterial roads. Special attention has been given to restore bad roads like KH Road, 100 Feet Road in Indiranagar and roads connecting the main bus stand.
