Ranga Shankara to celebrate anniversary with play festival

Bangalore: Three hundred plays from across the globe in a span of a year of its existence. That’s what Ranga Shankara, the toast of theatre circles, which celebrates a year on October 20, has accomplished. To say nothing of the multi-lingual variety, 62 English plays, 69 Kannada plays and an audience of 50,000.

Here’s to the theatre lover — a festival of plays over 17 days. The fest has a comprehensive variety on a platter — plays in six languages, writing workshops for young professionals, tributes to Kannada theatre.

Their is also a seminar series focussing on the lives and works of five major theatre influences — K V Subanna, Ebrahim Alkazi, Vijay Tendulkar, M S Sathyu and Badal Sircar.

Playwright Girish Karnad, in his capacity as president of the Sanket Trust talked of taking his latest play, Odakalu Bimba (A Heap of Broken Images in English) to different districts.

Samuel Selvakumar of Hutch (which has been partnering Ranga Shankara in their endeavours) even announced a play by Hutch themselves, Play the Play.

The schedule:

October 28 — Moteram ka Satyagraha by IPTA; Nov. 2 — Padukalam by Koothu P Pattarai; Nov. 5 — Deep Fried Jam by Vismayah; Nov. 7 — The Magic Hour and A Terrible Beauty Is Born and Nov. 11 — Mahadevbhai by Working Title.
