Bangalore: Leaders of industry have voiced their dismay over the resignation of Infosys chief Narayana Murthy as chairman of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), calling it ’ sad day for Bangalore’. Murthy quit the hig profile post following JDS leader Deve Gowda’s belittling of Murthy’s contribution to the i national airport project.

C N K umar , convenor of Bangalore Forum for Information T echnology (BFIT ), said, "Murthy has contributed a lot to make BIAL a reality . It sad to know that his leadership and vision not be available anymore. It is a significant los and will have an impact on the project." Pradeep Dutta, Managing Director of Synopsis, termed Murthy’s resignation ’unfortunate’ for Bangalore.

"As it is, the City’s infrastructure is crumbling and the airport project was one of the more visible basic amenities being developed. Murthy was one of the most credible and respected leaders of the industry who devoted much of his time and energy to the airport project. It unfortunate that his contributions are being undermined and I feel it is a sad day for Bangaloreans," he said.

Bangalore Chamber of Industries and Commerce Chairman Anant L Koppar termed it a setback for public-private partnership in State.

" The world over , public-private partnership is thriving and Karnataka was one of the first States in the country to adopt this model. Incidents like this are a black mark on th industry ." However , Flextronics Vice President R K Mishra opined that Murthy’s resignation was foregone conclusion as his role was that of anchor person in getting the project sanctioned. "In the clash of egos between two political leaders, Murthy became a victim. It actually provided the right oppourtunity for Murthy to resign." Mishra felt Murthy’s resignation would not have an adverse impact on the project.

Speaking to the press in New Delhi, BIAL CEO Albert Brunner expressed "shock and surprise" at the resignation but added he was confident the project would be completed on time. "I am surprised and shocked ... It was a privilege working with him. I will try to persuade him to withdraw his resignation," Brunner said.
