Storm water drain overflows, traffic thrown out of

HE incessant rain that lashed the City on Monday hindered traffic movement for several hours and brought down trees in various parts.
According to sources from Met department the City received a rainfall of 43.2 mm while Air Port recorded 42.2 mm. The reason for the continuous rains for the last few days was attributed to the south west monsoon withdrawing from south peninsula and the setting in of the north east monsoon.
The flow of traffic was paralysed with knee-deep water flooding the narrow streets like Cottonpet Main Road, Goodshed Road, Khoday Circle as water from a storm water drain near mini Lalbagh overflowed as it is choked with waste and debrisit.
Traffic came to halt on majpr roads in Rajajinagar, Malleswaram, Koramangala, Ganganagar, Basavanagudi, M G Road and Brigade Road. The stretch in front of Small Industries Service Institute (SISI) resembled a pond with rain water flooding the road. Many vehicles, especially four wheelers, stopped in the middle of the roads while passing through the water pool thus causing a major traffic block for some time.
A huge tree uprooted on a narrow road near Mattadahalli disrupting the flow of traffic badly. Uprooting of a tree and branches coming down from others were also reported from Bapujinagar, Indiranagar, Vasanthnagar and RPC Layout.
Traffic near construction sites of flyovers at Anandrao Circle and Nehru Circle was moving at a snail’s pace.
The Bangalore City Corporation (BCC) emergency services team swung into action to clear the fallen trees and pump out water from low lying areas. However, no casualties have been reported.
Some of the roads coming under City Municipal Councils like Puttenahalli, Bommanahalli and K R Puram too were inundated with water. The residents of Kothanur Main Road cursed the civic authorities as they had to put up with slushy roads even for a small intensity of rain.
