BCC evicts footpath vendors in Jayanagar

FOLLOWING complaints from the public with regard to encroachment on footpaths, the Bangalore City Corporation (BCC) officials, with assistance from the police, evicted as many as 10 vendors who had set up shops on the footpaths near Jayanagar shopping complex on Monday .

Speaking to BVT , BCC deputy commissioner (market) Srinivasaiah said that the vendors were evicted in a bid to provide more space to pedestrians to move with ease.

Stating that they could initiate action without serving notice if hawkers had occupied public places, he said, "W e have cleared around 60 per cent of the encroachments and will launch an intensive drive against the encroachers shortly . Srinivasaiah said a hawkers zone would soon be formed to relocate them.

However , Pattabhiramanagar corporator N Nagaraju, who visited the spot, has sought time for two days to enable the vendors to shift their businesses to new place.

Meanwhile, a few hawkers gheraoed the officials during the eviction. One of the vendors claimed that they had paid Rs 800 to obtain permission from the authorities concerned. After having paid the fee for putting up a shop, why should we vacate, another vendor , while flashing a receipt, quipped.
