Bangalore: The Silicon Valley of India is recognised by another sobriquet - ‘most preferred health hub’ of the country, thanks to a number of multi-speciality hospitals springing up in the City. These hospitals are drawing patients from in and outside the country.

With a twin objective of tapping the growing potential and providing treatment to the poor, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) will soon start its own state-of-the-art hospital. Incidentally, this will be the first hospital to be constructed by the university after it was established in 1976. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting in the City on Monday.

The proposed 750-bed hospital will be constructed at a cost of Rs 150 crore in the next three years. The university will provide Rs 75 crore towards the project, while the rest will be funded by the State Government and donations from public, IT and BT companies.

As per the guidelines of the Medical Council of India (8), a college should have a minimum of 25 acres of land. The university is in the process of identifying 25 acres of land near Magadi road for the purpose and it also plans to set up a medical college there.

A new medical college means an addition of more than 100 seats to government quota. (However, six other medical colleges at Bidar, Raichur, Belgaum, Shimoga, Hassan and Mandya is pending before MCI).

The proposed hospital will also be the third major hospital in the City after Victoria Hospital and Bowring and Lady Curzon hospital.
