Sheila moots Delhi model for city

The Times of India

Bangalore: Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday outlined the ‘decongestion’ road map put into practice in the national capital and indicated that it could be a model for beleaguered Bangalore to emulate.

Speaking to reporters here, along with CM N. Dharam Singh and water resources minister Mallikarjun M. Kharge, Dikshit said: “We built alternate traffic routes to ease the congestion, 42 flyovers and the Metro. We are not teaching lessons to anyone else. Since Bangalore has opted for Metro, it can also do all this.’’

Outlining details of the large-scale National Capital Region (NCR) programme aimed at decongesting Delhi, Dikshit said it was still going on. “We are trying to encourage people to go to other cities around New Delhi. Gurgaon and Noida have come up well, but people still depend on Delhi for hospitals and schools. Our neighbouring states of UP, Punjab and Haryana have to cooperate and build infrastructure for us to tackle this problem.’’
